Blackberry secara resmi memberikan update untuk perangkat tabletnya. Sayangnya update ini bukanlah seperti yang ditungggu oleh pemilik Blackberry Playbook yaitu OS BB10, melainkan update untuk OS 2.1 saja.

Secara spesifik, Blackberry merilis Blackberry Playbook OS to OS 2.1.0.1526. Besar file yang perlu diunduh adalah sekitar 133 MB saja. OS update ini memperbaiki beberapa bugs juga beberapa pembaruan seperti; peningkatan kemampuqn browser, audio boost juga rebranding Blackberry Appworld menjadi Blackberry World serta dukungan in-app payment support dan SMS over bridge.

Anda bisa melihat ada notifikasi update atau jika belum terlihat di device playbook, silahkan coba secara manual dengan mengecek setting-software updates.

As Playbook users awaiting for OS 2.1 update, RIM come up with a surprising news of launching Playbook 4G LTE and and update to Playbook OS to 2.0.1.668. Small text in the update announcement mentioned about to address email enhancements, contacts, calendar and bridge improvements.

Some  improvement also experienced in:

• Improved Wifi Connections
• Apps appear to be loading faster
• Browser loads and moves around faster

the size of the update also quite big around 313 MB.

Just some time ago we heard about RIM confirming plan to develop Blackbery Playbook 4G and only weeks ago leaks on picture of the upcoming PlayBook tablet, Today RIM officially launched the New 4G LTE™ BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet with built-in support for cellular networks. The new 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook maintains a sleek and ultra-portable form while delivering overall faster performance over the original BlackBerry PlayBook, as well as support for blazing fast 4G LTE networks.

The Tablet is launched in Canada first and will be available from Bell, Rogers and TELUS in Canada on August 9, 2012. Additional variants of the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet supporting various high speed cellular networks are expected to be available in the coming months from carriers in the US, Europe, South Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean.

Seperti sudah diberitakan sebelumnya bahwa RIM sedang melakukan testing internal untuk Blackberry Playbook OS yang baru, kemarin Blackberry Playbook OS 2.1.0560 resmi dirilis oleh RIM di Developer Zone. Developer dapat mendownload OS Playbook ini sesudah terlebih dahulu mendaftarkan PIN dan emailnya.  Daftar ke halaman developer 

Fitur yang ditampilkan OS 2.1.0.560 Beta for Developers adalah

• Perbaikan dalam support HTML5
• Aplikasi Android sekarang bisa mengakses hardware Camera, jadi lebih banyak aplikasi Android yang bisa berjalan di PlayBook
• Portrait support for Email, Calendar and Contacts
• Improved folder support including IMAP folder support
• Tiap aplikasi Android akan jalan di windownya sendiri. Hal ini akan meningkatkan user experience dan konsistensi bagi runtime aplikasi yang lain.
• Full device encryption is now supported, jadi seluruh device dan partisi personal bisa diamankan.
• Screenshots di save dalam format lossless PNG.
• In-App Payment sekarang disupport melalui BlackBerry Payment SDK, Jadi aplikasi Android applications dapat menempatkan virtual items untuk dijual dalam aplikasi mereka.

Harap diingat bahwa OS update ini ditujukan untuk Developer bukan untuk end-user. Jadi kalau Anda bukan developer atau user yang bisa menerima banyak bugs untuk playbooknya jangan menginstall OS ini.

Catatan:

Sama seperti OS 2 beta untuk developer yang dibagikan saat DevCon Asia di Singapura Desember  2011, beberapa hal yang perlu diperhatikan sebelum menginstall OS 2.1 Beta ini:

• Sesudah instalasi PlayBook OS 2.1 Anda tidak bisa membackup dan me-restore data kembali ke OS 2.0.xxx
• Aplikasi yang di download atau dibeli dari App World sewaktu menggunakan PlayBook OS 2.1 tidak bisa jalan pada versi OS Playbook yang lain.
• Tidak semua aplikasi yang jalan di Playbook OS 2.0 bisa jalan di OS 2.1.
