Kesan pertama

Interaksi saya dengan device blackberry boleh dibilang sudah cukup lama sudah lebih dari 7 tahun. Dimulai dengan menerima pekerjaan di sebuah lembaga multilateral yang beranggotakan 192 negara di dunia. Medio Agustus 2005, untuk pertama kalinya saya bertemu supervisor yang datang ke Indonesia untuk membantu melaksanakan training untuk capacity development. Saat bertemu dengan beliau awalnya agak takjub melihat supervisor saya yang jauh-jauh datang dari NY membawa sebuah handphone yang mirip kalkulator layar monokrom yg bisa kirim dan terima email realtime, dengan jog dial model sony phone waktu itu atau istilahnya scroll button. Fungsi email di smartphone saat itu sudah banyak dilakukan oleh device berbasis windows mobile dan symbian dengan sistem pull yang bisa diset dengan interval waktu tertentu. dan karena biaya data saat itu masih mahal yang didownload biasanya hanya header email saja, kalau ada yang penting baru didownload sepenuhnya email yang diperlukan. Smartphone windows phone saat itu yang sedang naik daun adalah HP Ipaq series, juga O2 XDA series juga nokia terminator 9200

Salah satu pionir toko aplikasi untuk gadget, mobihand, baru baru ini memutuskan untuk menutup bisnisnya. Saya ingat dulu pertama kali beli aplikasi untuk palm, windows mobile, blackberry, android di situs ini. Dua tahun terakhir saya juga jadi mitra mobihand untuk menjual themes blackberry dengan nama patriaguides. selain menjual aplikasi, situs ini juga menjual gimmick gadget yang lain seperti accesories untuk gadget akan tetapi tetap porsi terbesar pemasukannya adalah dari aplikasi mobile device terutama untuk sakarang ini blackberry dan android.

Dunia bisnis memang kejam, dan sepertinya pangsa pasar mobihand ini tergerus dengan hadirnya toko aplikasi native dari penyedia OS seperti blackberry appworld dan PlayStore sehingga developer lebih memilih untuk menjual di native store ini karena skema pendapatannya lebih baik dan juga customer bisa langsung mengakses toko native ini. Berikut adalah pengumuman yang dibuat mobihand untuk pelanggannya dan vendornya tentang penutupan bisnisnya

From San Francisco to Indonesia, from Brazil to Moscow, for eight years we served millions of worldwide customers with their app needs and delivered hundreds of millions of downloads.

We enjoyed the rise of many different platforms. BlackBerry and then Android were the biggest. And we suffered through the fall of others. Goodbye Palm and maybe BlackBerry?

Remember when we downloaded apps onto a PC and then sideloaded them through a cable to our phones? Today, our apps are discovered, downloaded and updated with very little effort right onto our devices (phones and tablets that we could not have imagined when we started). We are proud to have pioneered many of the innovations that all mobile users enjoy today.

We lived through all of these changes, including the entry of some very large companies into the app industry. These companies changed the industry with their massive resources and easy access to existing customers (which some of them vigorously protect by closing their app systems).

Domination of mobile app distribution by a relatively small number of large companies has made participation increasingly difficult for independent app distributors. While it was very hard to reach this decision, we have concluded that we have to discontinue our current services. We can only hope that the assets we built over the years will find a new purpose.
