[Tips] Install Blackberry 10 Apps Using Google Chrome or Firefox

Jun 28, 2013

This tips will guide you on how to install Blackberry Playbook and Blackberry 10 Apps.  unlike the conventional side loading *. bar files into your Blackberry Playbook using  Software called DDPB or Sachibar, now we can install the apps we need using an internet browser (Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox).

My experience showed that using this method is better and more efficient  than using the cable data.

  1. Its integrated with your internet browser
  2. Simple
  3. faster  to install
  4. wired and wireless install supported

Main Features

  1. Save your password in the browser for auto login (or not if you choose not to).
  2. List all the apps installed. Query run status, launch, terminate, or uninstall any individual app.
  3. Install apps by a queue. Multiple apps may be added to the queue by choosing files in a dialog or a simple drag and drop. Apps may be removed from the queue and installation may be aborted. Installation status is displayed in two steps: file uploading (to the PlayBook) with a progress bar and the actual installation with echoed messages.
  4. Auto retry for any incomplete installation or uninstallation.
  5. Log and categorize all the results of installations. Locate each one of them by a simple click

Requirement:

  1. minimum Google Chrome version 17.0 or Mozilla Firefox version 6.0
  2. Install specified  extension for chrome and firefox
  3. Wifi is turned on and ensure you have the ip address of the Playbook or BB10 device (I am using Z10)

Installation for Mozilla Firefox

it’s a bit complicated using firefox since basically the extension was designed natively for Google Chrome. here’s the workaround

  1. Find and install an extension which can set User-Agent based on the site you visit, such as UAControl (easier), or Mason (more advanced)
  2. Get the hostname or IP address of your PlayBook. Assume it’s 192.168.12.34.
  3. For UAControl, add site 192.168.12.34, and set the custom User-Agent to “QNXWebClient/1.0”.
  4. For Mason, add a rule including URL “^https://192\.168\.12\.34/” (regular expression), and set the custom request header User-Agent to “QNXWebClient/1.0”.
  5. If you don’t already have Greasemonkey installed, I don’t think you are actually using Firefox. But anyway, install the Greasemonky extension if this is the case.
  6. Click here and install the Greasemonkey script.
  7. If the Tablet Network Name (hostname) of your PlayBook is not exactly “playbook” (or you don’t know what it is), go to Firefox » Add-ons » User Scripts » PlayBook App Manager » Options » Add Included Page “https://192.168.12.34/*”.
  8. Visit and bookmark https://192.168.12.34. Ignore any SSL certificate error.Pros
  • Note:
  • You can add an exception to ignore the SSL certificate error.
  • Setup is a hassle.
  • No configuration page. So each time you add/remove/change the hostname/IP of your PlayBook, you need to add/remove/change the corresponding value in the settings of both Greasemonkey and UAControl/Mason.
  • No auto update.
